It’s June, the school year is winding down and for many it means there is a teenager under their roof who is done with school forever….well High School anyway!

It is graduation time and that means it is time to celebrate!  While we are in full support of throwing a fabulous party to commemorate your child’s achievement, we want to caution you regarding the liability issue of hosting a party that serves alcohol.

Celebrate Responsibly
Since many of your party guests are likely to be under-age, you could be held liable should a guest leave intoxicated and get injured or cause injury to another party. Without proper cover you could be open to lawsuits, legal expenses and monetary judgments.  It may be wise to have a conversation with your agent if a graduation party is in your immediate future.

What’s a Parent to Do?
How can you celebrate the occasion without putting anyone (or anything) in jeopardy?  We’ve put together a few ideas for you:

  • Those of you with children graduating this year may already have party plans in place.  If this is the case, choose under-aged appropriate beverages.  Sparkling ciders, punches and soda.
  • Consider hosting an open house celebration where friends and family can drop by anytime during a designated time frame to wish your graduate well.  You can offer refreshments without the stress of a full blown party.
  • Plan an outing to commemorate the day.  Does your family love boating?  Has your graduate always wanted to try rock climbing?  Instead of the traditional party, consider organizing a day of fun for your graduate and their closest friends and family.

Whatever you choose to do to mark the occasion, your friends at Advocate Brokerage Corp wish you and your graduate the very best!  Congratulations!  You made it!
