The best way to be prepared just in case; is to put together a resource kit for you and your family.  While most storms don’t cause massive damage, you’ll be prepared in the event that one does. Below is Advocate’s comprehensive list of items to have on hand Just in Case a major storm comes our way.

Emergency supplies for your car:

  1. Jumper Cables
  2. Tools
  3. Spare Tire
  4. Tire Repair Kit
  5. Matches
  6. Flashlight and extra batteries
  7. Shovel
  8. Traction Mats
  9. Extra Blankets
  10. Hazard kit/Road Flair to alert emergency personnel
  11. Ice scrapers
  12. Bag of sand or cat litter for better traction
  13. Cell phone and charger

Emergency Supplies for your Home:

  1. Water (1 gallon per person per day for at least 3 days)
  2. Non-perishable foods (canned goods, trail mix, peanut butter, crackers)
  3. Can opener
  4. Disposable silverware, papertowels, papers
  5. First Aid Kit (bandages, pain relievers, tweezers, antibiotic ointment)
  6. Moist towelettes
  7. Portable battery-operated radio
  8. Flashlight
  9. Extra batteries
  10. Fire extinguisher
  11. Whistle (to call for help)
  12. Blankets
  13. A change of clothing for each member of the family including sturdy shoes
  14. Matches (in a sealable bag)
  15. Plastic bags of various sizes with plastic ties
  16. Basic toolkit or multi-tool
  17. Dust masks
  18. Plastic sheeting and duct tape (to build a wind proof temporary shelter)
  19. Pet food and additional water for pets
  20. Container or Bowl for pet food/water
  21. One week worth of medication for our everyone in your family including your pets
  22. Specialized supplies that are needed such as formula, diapers or feminine products
  23. Waterproof container for important documents such as driver’s license, check book, social security cards, insurance information, birth certificates, etc. in case you need to evacuate and take these with you
  24. Local maps
  25. Paper, pencil and activity books and crayons for kids
  26. Cell phone chargers, inverters and solar charger
  27. A few hundred dollars in cash.

ADVOCATE TIP – Keep this stashed in a safe place. In the event of a major power outage, you may not be able to use credit cards or withdraw money from a bank or ATM.
