Hurricane Season Is Coming, It’s Time to Buckle Up!

June 1st marks the official start of Hurricane Season which runs through November 30th. Each year the National Weather Service makes predictions for what we can expect in the season ahead and this year was no exception.

A look to the year ahead
The current outlook foresees a busy season for us with above-normal activity likely.  The average season produces 12 named storms with 6 that turn into hurricanes and half of those considered major hurricanes.

As it stands we have a 60% chance of a season that is filled with activity.  That looks like 13 – 19 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes; 3-6 turning into major hurricanes with winds of 111 mph or higher.

It’s Time to Prepare!

With so much focus placed on reopening after the Coronavirus lockdown, you don’t want to overlook the importance of getting ready for an active storm season.  You should also keep in mind that some of the guidelines you are used to following may have been updated due to the continued concern regarding COVID-19. Your friends at Advocate Brokerage don’t want you to wait until you hear about a storm warning to get your home ready for a storm.

Our favorite preparation tips include:

  • It is a good idea to download the FEMA app so you can receive real-time alerts from the National Weather Service.  (You can stay informed of up to 5 locations nationwide which is helpful for those who own more than one home.)
  • Create an emergency plan and make sure everyone who lives in your home is familiar.  If you already have an emergency plan in place it is a good idea to review it and update it in light of COVID-19.  (As an example, some community shelters may not be open and they may have requirements regarding spacing and face masks.)
  • Gather supplies and pack a Go Bag that includes cash, medications, pet supplies as well as disinfectant supplies and extra masks.
  • Install properly sized storm shutters which are important to help protect your home from wind and water damage.
  • Consider wind resistant roof options such as roof straps, or tie downs to help your roof stay in place in the event of a major storm.
  • Installing a permanent generator is a great idea. Plus, many insurance carriers will offer a discount for homes with one installed.
  • Make digital copies of all insurance policies and personal identification documents and save them in a secure, password protected place.

Our final thought…

We don’t encourage a wait and see attitude when it comes to protecting your property which is why we want homeowners to consider Flood Insurance, even if you don’t own a home in a flood zone.  Don’t wait because the Federal flood policy has a 30-day waiting period.  We would be happy to review your current coverage and address any concerns you may have!  As always, please give us a call if you have any questions.
