Get Your Home Ready For a Long Winter’s Nap!

Winter came a touch early this year so we hope you had time to prepare your home for the remainder of the long winter months that lie ahead.  Below is a list of items we recommend all homeowners address so that they reduce their risk of common winter mishaps.

 

To reduce the risk of fire:

• • If you have not already done so, have your chimney inspected and cleaned.
  • Double check your oil or propane levels so that you don’t get into a situation where you run out of fuel.
  • Make sure your HVAC equipment is in peak condition by scheduling annual maintenance if you have not already done so.
  • Make sure your home is protected from a fire that occurs in the middle of the night.  If you do not have a Central Station Fire alarm, test your smoke detectors and change the batteries (or better yet, have one installed).
  • Place fire extinguishers in your kitchen, near your fireplace and on each floor of your home.  Make sure all the adults in the home know how to operate them.

 

To reduce the risk of slips, trips or falls:

• • Stock-up on ice melt, salt or sand.
  • Make sure your shovel and/or snow blower is in working order. 
  • Take a look at the lighting leading up to your entryways and make sure there are no burnt out bulbs and any timer settings have been updated.

 

To reduce the risk of water damage:

• • If you have not already done so, make sure all gutters are clear of leaves and debris and that water has been diverted to flow at least 3 to 4 feet away from your home.
  • Again, if you have not already done so, be sure to turn off exterior faucets, drain and store hoses, and make sure every adult in your home knows how to shut off the main water valve.
  • Flush your boiler if you have steam heat.
  • Test your sump pump.
  • Take a look at your roof clear any accumulating debris and repair any breaks in the seals in the flashing.
  • Be sure you attic is well insulated and ventilated to prevent the formation of ice dams.
  • Our best advice though is to install a whole house water leak detection system so that if a pipe bursts, you will be notified right away and the water in your home will be shut off to prevent any further damage.
