Memorial Day is upon us and as it is often looked at as the unofficial first day of summer we felt it was important to talk about your summer insurance needs. We want to make sure your summer is as carefree as possible. Today’s blog will address insurance for boats, collector cars and rental cars as well as vacation homes and teen driving.

Boats
While some boats are covered under your homeowners policy, most will require a separate marine policy. Other factors to consider when purchasing a policy for your boat include: navigational limits, liability coverage when your boat is being transported on dry land, theft or vandalism when your boat is parked on your property and deciding between an agreed value policy or a market value policy. We would love to help you navigate the waters of boat insurance and find the policy that suits your needs.

Pools
If your summer plans include installing a pool of your very own, you will want to be sure you homeowners policy will provide enough coverage. A pool is a liability issue and you may want to increase your coverage to protect yourself from the risks involved. Additionally, you may want to be sure you have the extra protection an umbrella policy can provide.

Collector Cars
If you own or are considering the purchase of a collectable car, a specialized policy is important. You need a policy that allows for the higher value of the vehicle such as an agreed value policy. You’ll also need someone who understands your passion for the car and will not place restrictions on who takes care of repairs or where you are purchasing replacement parts.

Rental Cars
If renting a car is part of your summer travel plans, you need to take a closer look at the coverage you have in place. You will also want to consider who will be driving the rental vehicle. Your current automobile policy may provide coverage for rental vehicles. The credit card you use to purchase the rental may also provide coverage. Take a look at both policies and determine if the coverage you have is adequate.

Vacation Homes
Your retreat; your home away from home deserves insurance that protects the vacation home but doesn’t overlap with your primary residence’s homeowners policy. Deciding how to go about obtaining adequate protection is where we come in. We can help you look at your current coverage and determine if you need to fill in the gaps with an umbrella policy, if you need a flood insurance policy and if you have adequate coverage for the times when no one is occupying the home. A home left unoccupied for long periods of time means there may not be anyone around to put out a fire, put a stop to a leaky pipe or report damage from a robbery.

Teen Summer Driving
Summer months often bring more idle time for your teens. There are no shortages of activities for them to attend, plus with a summer job, they may be spending more time behind the wheel. Add a few friends as passengers into the equation and you have a few reasons to begin thinking about an increase in liability insurance. If your teenager will be spending more time behind the wheel during summer months than they did while school was in session, consider calling us to review your coverage.

As your insurance Advocate, it is our job to ensure you are fully protected. We want you to have a carefree summer! If you feel you need to set aside some time to speak with us to be sure all your policies are up to date, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to speak with you so you can relax and enjoy all the fun summer will bring!
